From Skate Ramps to the Shop: 10 Years of Bolt Woodworks
Ten years ago, Bolt WoodWorks officially began in a 150 square foot garage with little more than a few tools and a lot of ambition. Today, we’re operating out of a 2,000+ square foot shop and it’s been quite the ride to see how far a little sawdust and a lot of persistence can go.
My passion with building things didn't start with blueprints, it started with a pile of plywood in the driveway and whatever materials I could get my hands on. Growing up around construction and tools, I was constantly tinkering. While others were buying ready-made gear, I was busy engineering my own skateboarding ramps. Those ramps were my first real lesson in structural integrity - if you didn’t build it right, you felt it.
That drive to understand how things work, and how to make them better, is exactly what led me to start Bolt Woodworks.
Our beginning was tight and dusty, but it’s where the foundation was laid. The projects have gotten larger and the tools have certainly upgraded, but the "skate ramp" mindset and the need to make things tough, functional, and built to last is in every piece I touch.
The Real Boss: Todd the Shop Cat
As seen on social media you may already know the real face of the business, Todd. When I moved into our current space about eight years ago, Todd was there at my feet from day 1 with his resume ready. After realizing he’d been abandoned, I took him in, installed a few custom cat doors and feeding stations, and he’s been supervising ever since.
Todd is effectively our Head of HR and Break Enforcer. He has a knack for wandering over in the middle of a build to demand a "mandatory" pet session, reminding me to step back from the work for a minute. He is so central to the shop that he even has his own logos featured on our shirts and apparel. If you see someone wearing a Bolt Woodworks shirt, that's Todd on the back.
